net art: rafael lozano-hemmer

Net art (also know as Internet art), describes of movement from the 1990s to the early 2000s, that used the internest as the primary medium. Starting as a paroday of the avante garde, Bet art saw the internest molded into experiences that hadn’t been had before. As much as it was a critue of the art world, Net art was a political and social landmark that circumvented the ‘rules’ of the web creating thought-provoking, interactive and interconnected experiences.

One practitioner of this movement is Rafael Lozano-Hemmer (1967, Mexico City). He’s an electronic artist who creates art for public participation using things like electronics, digital surveillance and telematic networks.

Studying for a career in the sciences, Lozano-Hemmer joined friends in creative endevours which deepened his own practice. His experience in the sciences and influenced his work in numerous ways, providing conecptual and practical aid to creating his work.

Lozano-Hemmer is best known for theatrics, with the internet aiding directly the interactiviy alongside; robotics, real-time computer graphics, film projections, positional sound, internet links, and the likes. Similar to the ethos of many who came from the Net art movement, his installations interrupt the homogenized urban condition by providing critical platforms for participation, often exploring themes of perception, deception and surveillance.
