Similar to an omnipotent god, networks seem to tug at the strings that puppet who we are and yet to become. Despite the connotations to technology, networks cover a huge ground, grouping us all in some way or another through connections.
Everything we know of relies on this process of networks, helping everything along to the way it is now. A rainforest is a beautiful ecological example of networks. Staring at the vasts books and documentaries by Attenborough and the likes, you can learn how the rainforest’s conditions is birthed, maintained and evolving due to the intricacy of networks. Inextricably, trees provide fuit to the animals who disperse the seeds, which grow- cycling nutrients up to the canopy and back down again. This is only one of the many networks that create just a splatter on this world.
I wonder how many networks I am in? Would it even be quantifiable?
These aren’t fantastical things, networks showcase how processes link creating a mix of results. My mum met my dad through a social and cultural network, they birthed my brother and I through the help of networks that enable the existence of hospitals, housing and, groceries. The international network of my dad’s job at the time saw us move to the UK, where new networks through school and learning developed in me.
Like the veins that pump the blood around me, I exist with networks in nooks and crannys I didn’t know existed. Though abstract like an emotion networks allow for me to write this and reflect on the importance of whatever networks have gotten us here so far.
